Capri

Capri is worth visiting for the coastal views of the Mediterranean Ocean and the mountains. Most travellers will do a day trip to Capri and spend the day exploring the island and trying all the best foods.

Capri is also home to the Blue Grotto, a sea cave that illuminates a gorgeous blue inside of the cave. You can’t swim inside of the cave, but you can go on a rowboat and see the cave this way.

Naples

Naples is the largest city in southern Italy and is known for being the birthplace of pizza! The picturesque city has colourful buildings, delicious food, and a rich history.

Naples is also very close to Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano that hasn’t erupted since 1944.

Pompeii

Pompeii is perhaps the most historic city that lies in southern Italy. The city was destroyed and covered in volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The once thriving city is now one of the largest archaeological sites in the world.

It can take a very long time to explore all of Pompeii, but you can see highlights of the town within a few hours.

Some key landmarks to look for include the frescos that are on some of the buildings, the plaster casts of some bodies, and the Civil Forum.

Sorrento

Sorrento has sea cliffs and colourful buildings that sit right along the cliffs by the sea. The town is easy to explore on foot and walk down all the alleyways that have all kinds of shops.

The town can get quite busy during summer as it’s a very popular town. From Sorrento, you can get a ferry to Capri and go inside the sea cave, the Blue Grotto.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum is similar to Pompeii and was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius after the deadly eruption. Most people aren’t aware of this city due to how famously known Pompeii is, but it’s worth checking out the ruined city of Herculaneum.

Herculaneum is a lot smaller than Pompeii but wasn’t hit as hard, so the buildings are in better condition. Make sure you see some notable landmarks including the Hall of the Augustales, the House of the Relief of Telephus, and the thermal baths.
