Pompeii Tour from Rome Itinerary

Pompeii is a slice of Italian history that remains in its tragic original state. On this Pompeii Tour from Rome, we’ll take you on a special journey through space and time to the crumbling ruins of Pompeii to experience a unique example of Greco-Roman life.

The Pompeii Tour from Rome begins as we travel along the famous Highway of the Sun, whizzing past picturesque Roman countryside and the opulent Castelli Romani. As we go, you’ll be party to stunning views out across the sparkling Mediterranean and out to the imposing heights of Mount Vesuvius. Keep your eyes peeled for the smattering of ancient sites, too, as well as the iconic Gulf of Naples. We enjoy a panoramic tour of the city of Naples from the comfort of the coach, stopping for a photo from a spectacular view point overlooking the bay with the imposing form of Mt Vesuvius in the background.

We’ll stop for a traditional Italian pizzeria lunch to refuel for the rest of the journey before heading on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii. Alongside a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll get to skip the long queues and dive right into the fascinating and tragic history of this ancient ruined city.

For the afternoon, you’ll get to explore this once-thriving site that has been frozen in time by layers and layers of thick volcanic ash. The harrowing scene is filled with ancient stories and shocking visuals that your guide will describe along the way. After being suddenly buried in the outpouring of Mount Vesuvius, the deep layers of pumice and ash has ironically protected the city for more than 17 centuries so that it still remains just as it did the day the volcano erupted.

Once we’ve explored the painful past of Pompeii, we’ll head back through the glorious scenery of the Italian countryside as we make our way back to the city. Again, we’ll soar past ancient landmarks and pretty villages – all a far cry from the grey remains of Pompeii. We’ll get you back to Rome in time to enjoy the rest of the evening and dig into some of the more modern-day activities the city has to offer.
