What is the best way to travel to Pompeii?

Planning a trip to the ancient ruins of Pompeii and looking for a way to get there? Look no further!

Thankfully for you, there are many ways you can travel to Pompeii. Whether you’re close by or a bit further out, there are many ways you can reach Pompeii to explore the ancient ruins.

Pompeii is an archaeological park where you can see the ruins of the town that was destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD.

Take a train to Pompeii

The train is a great way to reach Pompeii via a few different cities. The easiest and quickest is from Naples which is about 35 minutes. You can get the train from Napoli Centrale towards Salerno or Sapri which stops at Pimpei station.

If you’re coming from Rome, the best train is from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then switch trains towards Salerno which stops at Pompei station. This train takes about two hours.

Take a bus to Pompeii

Getting a bus is another option, but it can take a bit longer to reach Pompeii. From Naples, it is an hour bus ride, or you can get a FlixBus from Sorrento which has a direct route to Pompeii.

There are a few different bus stops by Pompeii where it’s only a short walk to the entrance.

Pompeii Tours

Tours are another fantastic way of getting to Pompeii! There are plenty of tours that will pick you up and drop you off from a location to take you to Pompeii for a guided tour.

Most tours depart from Naples, from Sorrento, and from Rome and it is recommended to book a tour early to secure your spot.

Walk to Pompeii

If you are near Pompeii, walking could be your best option. We wouldn’t recommend walking anything more than 15 minutes, as you will be walking throughout the site as well!

Drive to Pomeii

Driving can be a relatively easy way to reach Pompeii. Depending where you’re coming from will depend on the drive.

Driving from Rome will be just under three hours. If you’re in Sorrento, the drive is 45 minutes. The drive is even shorter from Naples being about 20 minutes.

Ideally, you will want to spend about two to three hours at least to see Pompeii. The site is massive, and you would need days to explore all of it. If you book a guided tour, this is the very best way you can see Pompeii while learning about its history.
